Today it was announced that a new charitable entity, Red River STEM, seeks permission from the City of Shreveport to operate a science center in the Sci-Port Discovery building. Pending approval from the City, the Community Foundation and several other organizations and individuals plan to provide start-up funding for the new 501(c)3. Jay Pierson has agreed to serve as the new Board chairman if appropriately selected. A new Board is being formed and an Executive Director will be hired soon. Plans for reopening the rest of Sci-Port are in the works, so stay tuned for exciting new announcements! The POP exhibit and IMAX will remain open Thursday-Sunday.
Power of Play
The Power of Play (POP) Children's Museum, located on the second floor of the Science Center, is designed for children 8 and under, with parental supervision/interaction required. The exhibit features multiple exhibits and opportunities for children to play and learn together with their family members. Tickets for POP are $10 per person, ages 12 months and up.
The IMAX Dome Theater at Sci-Port is the only IMAX Dome Theatre in the State of Louisiana. It’s an immersive experience that allows families to “feel” the movie in a realistic and thrilling way. Tickets are $12 per person, ages 3 and up.

Upcoming Event – July 21, 2018
Join us in a forum-style event based around human genome editing, July 21 at Sci-Port Discovery Center.
As gene editing techniques become more refined, the possibility of editing the human genome is moving from science fiction to reality. What should we do with this power? Should we create babies who will never know disease? Should we eliminate mutations that increase the likelihood of certain cancers? Should parents be able to choose their future child’s eye color?
Many in the scientific community are calling for strict regulations on the use of this technology, while others are excited about the possibilities. The National Science Foundation is funding this forum to collect input from the general public, through round-table discussions.
Local experts will help provide audience members with background information on the technologies making it possible to rewrite our species’ genetic code, but this forum is more about your voice than theirs.
This forum is better suited for people 16 and over. Light refreshments will be provided, and pre-registration is strongly encouraged. E-mail email@example.com to reserve your seat or for further information.
The event will happen at Sci-Port Discovery Center on July 21 from 7 – 9 pm, with doors opening at 6:30.
