Early Childhood Programs

Sci-Port Discovery Center is home to the Power of Play (POP) Children’s Museum, an area set aside specifically for early learners through 2nd grade. POP is a kid-sized Shreveport-Bossier, allowing kids to run about town like the grown-ups. From visiting the fire station to the grocery store to a recreation of Shreveport’s Duck Pond, kids gain STEM skills, learn about the world around them and have fun.

Starting in the fall of 2017, schools visiting POP can now choose programming to complement the visit.

But, Louisiana's Space and Science Center (LSSC) within Sci-Port also offers plenty for younger visitors, both in terms of programs and permanent exhibits. Sci-Port is reserving the second Wednesday during the months of September through March for Pre-School–2nd grade only reservations. This will allow our younger students to more freely explore all Sci-Port has to offer in a safer and more friendly environment. Pre-School–2nd grade students are welcome any day at Sci-Port in addition to these reserved dates.

Pre-School Days

Special programs in LSSC on the second Wednesday of each month (September-March) focus on pre-school pre-emergent literacy skills and will include a book related to the theme of the day. These special programs (20-30 minutes) can be combined with another age-appropriate program from our catalog. Add on an IMAX® or a visit to POP for a small additional fee.

  • September 13: Count Me In
Your pre-schoolers will practice counting and explore different types of fruits.
  • October 11: Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!
Learn how we travel to outer space and make your own rocket.
  • November 8: The Shape of Things
“Eye Spy” different geometric shapes as we read a book about mice and their shape creations. Students will then assemble their own shape creation by using the characteristics they have learned about.
  • December 13: How Does My Garden Grow?
Learn about different vegetables and plant one to take home.
  • January 10: The Biggest Thing
While discovering who thinks they are the biggest thing in the ocean, students will practice size words and make their own "biggest thing.”
  • February 7: Terrific Turtles
After reading a story about turtles, students will spend some time making observations of our Sci-Port turtles. Then students will make and take their own turtle’s home. Touching allowed! Please note: Hands-on interaction with animals limited to animal health and availability.
  • March 7: Itty Bit of Mud Day
Let's get just an itty bit muddy as we celebrate International Mud Day (early), read about One Stuck Duck, and hold worm races.
