The 2016-2017 school year is already in full swing, and this has been a year of big changes at Sci-Port!
In November, Sci-Port opened our Power of Play Children's Museum (POP). We truly believe in the awesome power of play and believe that the type of informal learning opportunities POP offers to children ages 8 and under are crucial to the development both of tomorrow’s active learners and a vibrant future workforce. In POP, kids are invited to explore a kid-sized version of Shreveport-Bossier, all while being exposed to STEAM-inspired exhibits designed to meet early childhood learning standards. From exploring a farm to caring for pets at the vet, kids will spark their curiosity and discover fun at POP.
Because POP is separate from Louisiana’s Science and Space Center (LSSC), early childhood educators now have the freedom to craft the experience which best suits their students. In some cases, teachers may wish to purchase admission solely to POP or solely to LSSC, and in other cases, a joint visit may be the logical choice.
On the Science and Space Center side, we’ve recently opened Eat Well, Play Well, a set of new exhibits designed to engage students on topics ranging from nutrition to physical fitness.
In addition to those major structural and organizational changes, we have instituted several other changes to the way we offer programming in LSSC based on feedback we’ve received from educators.
First, we’ve simplified our Programs Catalog. Rather than asking educators to choose from a long, diverse, menu of à la carte demonstrations and labs, we have crafted STEM program packages for you to choose from. These pairings are not set in stone; you are free to personalize your visit and combine any of our age-appropriate program offerings to best meet the needs of your class. Are you a School Pass Partner? Don’t forget that our partner schools and classes, in addition to enjoying unlimited visits and other perks, can ask us to develop special programs specifically tailored to meet their needs.
We have also made it easier for you to personalize your IMAX® Dome Theater experience. While we will continue to offer popular, scheduled cross-curricular films such as National Parks Adventure and A Beautiful Planet, we have also lowered the number of students required to access films from our IMAX® library to 50. Among other options, you can swim with Dolphins, take a journey into Amazing Caves, or experience Hurricane Katrina in Hurricane on the Bayou.
Another new addition to your Sci-Port visit will be Lagniappe Experiences scheduled daily throughout the center. These are rotating staff-led interactions with our exhibits and exhibit spaces, designed to ensure that your students receive the most memorable educational experience possible. Meet an animal, experience Light & Color, join Becky on her Red River adventure and find Earth in the night sky of another planet in our solar system.
Despite all of the changes, the mission of Sci-Port remains unchanged. We believe that our brand of informal science education can perfectly complement the fantastic work you and your students do daily in the classroom. Our exhibit spaces and programming offer the practical, anchoring experiences that can serve to inspire your students before a new unit, reinforce learning after a unit, review material through a fresh perspective or reward kids for a job well done.
As always, we value your feedback. Let us know how your visit experience was in our post-visit survey, and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We look forward to serving you and your students this year!
Director of Education.
