Power of Play (POP) Children's Museum is a new children's museum located within Sci-Port Discovery Center.
What is POP?
Power of Play Children’s Museum, also known as POP, provides a fun and educational environment for children ages 8 and under. Children can visualize themselves as problem solvers and innovators in a kid-sized Shreveport-Bossier City. Play is the work of childhood, and the power of constructive play helps children discover the world around them.
Who is POP for?
POP is specially designed for children 8 and under. If an older child wants to join his or her younger sibling at POP, we welcome and encourage family play.
When is POP open?
POP is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the weekends, POP reflects the same hours as Louisiana’s Science and Space Center: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Noon to 5 p.m.Sunday.
How much is POP?
General admission to POP is $7, and admission is free for children 12 months and under. A membership to POP starts at $130.
Why is POP not included with admission to Louisiana’s Science and Space Center?
POP has its own admission price because it is a separate museum within the complex of Sci-Port Discovery Center. Sci-Port Discovery Center houses Louisiana’s Science and Space Center, what you usually think of when you think of Sci-Port, POP and the IMAX Dome Theater. Guests can enjoy one, two or all three of these experiences when they visit Sci-Port Discovery Center.
How is POP different from the children’s gallery?
POP is a completely themed children’s museum where all the exhibits work together for a coherent experience. The children’s gallery within Louisiana’s Science and Space Center (LSSC) contains hands-on exhibits for young children. Though this gallery is a fun place to play while discovering LSSC, the experience is a component of all LSSC has to offer, including exploration in physical sciences, space science, mathematics, the human body and Louisiana ecology.
I’ve supported Sci-Port for a long time, and I’m disappointed I have to pay extra to go to this new area. What gives?
Though POP is taking 10,000 square feet of Sci-Port Discovery Center’s space, many of the exhibits that used to inhabit this area have been relocated to the first floor of LSSC. A few of these exhibits have served Sci-Port for a long time, so they were retired. Guests now have more freedom in choosing what they want to experience at Sci-Port Discovery Center. Guests with older children can choose not to pay for POP, and guests with younger children can choose not to pay for LSSC. Memberships have been revamped so guests can essentially build a membership that works for them, keeping the Sci-Port experience as flexible and individualized as possible.
What’s POP’s purpose?
POP is a place for play, but it’s also a place for learning. POP’s exhibits are science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) related. POP allows kids to explore a mirror-image of their parents’ world with childlike imagination and wonder. The experiences kids discover at POP will not only make lasting, fun memories with their families, but also pave the way for future academic success.
